If a guy makes a date over a wk in advance, should he follow-up before?

A guy made a date with me for next week thur. He picked the place and made a reservation and told me the time. Is it expected that he also follow-up before the date again? Or since it is all set, is it "normal" that we just show up? Does it matter?
