How come Obama is losing to his as yet unnamed Republican opponent in the latest Gallup poll?

It's easy to vote against an incumbent for that nonexistent ACME Republican. But, once the Republicans elect a candidate, it's harder to vote against an incumbent and for a specific candidate, with their existent baggage. (whichever candidate is chosen) This is why incumbents so often win reelection.
